How to wash fly rugs and sweet itch rugs in a washing machine

Fly rugs and sweet itch rugs work hard during the summer months, collecting dust, dirt, sweat and plenty of horse hair. Regular washing helps keep rugs fresh and comfortable for your horse, but loose hair and debris can quickly build up inside your washing machine.

Before washing, brush off excess dirt and remove as much loose hair as possible. Fasten straps and closures to help protect the rug and your machine during the wash.

Placing the rug inside a Horsewear Wash Bag helps contain horse hair while allowing water and detergent to circulate through the fabric. Wash on a gentle cycle using the temperature recommended for the rug.

After washing, simply air dry the rug and shake out any trapped hair from the wash bag.
